The shaft you mention is a little large to be a ventilation shaft although
it is sunk down to the Swinnergill level (but no longer accessible from the
level). The best option if you have found Raistrick so difficult (as many of
us have),is to go to the county record office at Northallerton where you
will find thousands of records relating to the Swaledale mines as well as a
large collection of plans. One afternoon there will change your mind about
scanty information.
Alternatly you could look at the publications of the Northern Mines Research
Society which contian a great deal of information on mining in the Yorkshire
Dales, or wait for Mike Gill to finish a re-write of Raistricks book on
mines and smeltmills in Swaledale.
