A quick search for "Longyear" on the internet turned up the following
web page on Longyear's Spitzbergen coal mine:

Part of the Spitzbergen Coalfield was developed by John Monro Longyear
an American Mining Engineer. Sometime ago I became aware that in the
Boston suburb of Brooklin, at Fisher Hill there was established a Longyear
Foundation together with the Longyear Historical Society and the Svalbard
Library. As Longyear was establishing the coal industry in
Spitzbergen (for the Nowwegians?) during the period you are interested in,
it is possible that the type of information you require lies in Boston. I
presume that Longyear (who developed drilling equipment) may have had
connections with Sullivan's (who also developed drilling equipment).
Perhaps some of our American correspondents would like to comment.
Rob Vernon.
P.S. I understand the Michigan School of Mines also had involvement with
Spitzbergen.
