Peter,
Your comment on what to do with books after death rings loud clanging bells!
My wife too, is also planning on recouping some of what must be the tens of
thousands of pounds spent on books over the last forty years. However, she
is also aware of a long tradition amongst the clergy that our often vast
library of theology should be shared out amongst our colleagues. Given the
cost of books today, this can be a good way of helping the younger end build
up their libraries. I have left instructions that the "trawl" should start
with the most junior member - some of my older colleagues have given up
reading anyway!!
Obviously this is not appropriate for a lot of unique material, but perhaps
we should keep ourselves aware of younger researchers who struggle to build
up a library. If it saves them from hearing the all too familiar words from
their partner/spouse : "You spent how much...!!!!!" , we shall have done them
a service.
Peter.
