John Colby states "I asked why (loan as opposed to giving material to
museums) and was told that then they can't be disposed of as they're not the
property of the receiving body."
I would concur with this by adding a cautionary tail.
Some years ago (late 1980's) an elderly relative of mine GAVE a set of three
medals and an inscribed gold watch to the Chatterley Whitfield Museum.
Since the demise of Chatterley the Gold watch and an Edward VII Silver Medal
(Mines) have never been seen again. The other two medals did surface at the
National Coal Mining Museum at Wakefield having been sold as assets of the
failed Chatterley Whitfield Company.
Had the items been loaned they would have been returned to my relative or
her dependants. I have been searching for the missing items ever since I
discovered this fact.
The lesson? Only GIVE something away if you do not want it back EVER.

Phil Clifford
