A good place to donate your collections to is your/a local SMR, if you've
got papers, notes and photographs with a site-specific or regional focus.
This would ensure your material is easily accessible by the public and
people know your info exists.
The NMR at Swindon houses a huge collection of photographs of historical
interest and only a very small number covers mining heritage. I think it's
time to make up for this!
I suspect it's a bit more difficult with geological samples but I do know
of university curators who are keen to stock up on hand specimens.
Contacting a university near your research interest may be worth a try.
Finally, local history groups may be interested in taking over your
collection for local use. They are sometimes linked to adult education
courses and your material might be a useful basis for further study. But
do make sure someone (I suggest the relevant SMR) knows where you
deposited your information, otherwise it might simply disappear in some
drawer for times to come!
