I believe the following to be the distinction between mining & quarrying;
look in any good dictionary.
Mining is the removal of minerals
Quarrying is the removal of stone
Hence there really is no such thing as a stone mine, its actually an
underground quarry. This is why Bath and Cotswold stone 'miners' were always
referred to as quarrymen.
