I find the curent thread about scouring stones fascinating. My mother,
whose family owned houses in Holihead would certainly have been aware of
its use, BUT since all the houses we lived in had wooden steps and
porches, I never heard of it being used. If there were any houses with
stone steps, I am sure that some of the "British" people would have
scoured their steps (they tended to hold tight to "Old Country"
customs). I would assume that if any steps were scoured it was accepted
by all residents of our mining town as a quite normal procedure.
It would be very interesting to learn why David Saia, of
Williamsville, New York is interested. Did some people in that area
follow the custom?
