NEW MINERAL TRAMWAYS PROJECT OFFICER FOR
CORNWALL.
Cornwall's new Mineral Tramways Project Officer is Chris
Hariades who is looking forward to working with local people to
develop recreational trails across this popular area.
Chris, a landscape architect who previously worked in private
practice in Sherborne, Dorset, has already met with local interest
groups and is delighted with the support the project is receiving.
He is based in the Coast and Countryside Unit of the County
Council.
"My main role is to develop recreational trails along the route of
the former mineral tramways for use by walkers, cyclists and
horse riders" he explained. "These include the coast to coast
line between Portreath and Devoran using the Portreath
Tramroad and the Redruth- Chasewater Railway, which should
be completed and way-marked by June 2001".
The proposed works will enhance existing derelict areas to form
an attractive recreational resource for both local people and
visitors. This will boost the local economy, while conserving
existing wildlife habitats and the many historical and
archaeological features along the routes.
"Part of my job is to provide effective links between the existing
tramways corridors, at the same time as ensuring that the works
are sympathetic to their surroundings. " said Chris.
"I will also be working closely with groups representing walkers,
cyclists and horse riders to make sure that their specific needs
are fully considered.".
The project will build on work already completed, particularly
along The Cornish Way, which shares part of the route along the
Redruth and Chacewater Railway.
Detailed negotiations and site survey work are now underway
and Chris hopes to begin design work shortly to enable
construction works to begin in the Autumn.
Welcoming Chris's appointment, Bert Biscoe, Executive member
for the Environment, said "Mineral Tramways is an important
resource for the future. It is important that it is developed in ways
which reflect the significance of the Cornish landscape to
people's sense of well-being.. Consultation is the key . I am
confident that Chris Hariades will look before he leaps and
achieve sensitive and sustainable improvements".
