Please see request below from Lara. Can anyone help her with her
questions please? I would be grateful if you could reply direct to her
and not via myself.
Thanks

What I want to know:
1. In human history, or world history, in terms of the different "time
classifications" that we study world history - e.g., agricultural,
pre-industrial, industrial, - at what point did man discover that there
are
minerals they can use for different purposes and eventually discover
mining
as a method to "remove", and make use of these minerals?
Actually, I already have an elementary idea that mining is an ancient
"technology" that can even be traced to pre and Biblical times. But I
don't have enough literature to support this.
I have a reference here that says:
"Anthropologists designate Man's culture by his relation to minerals,
thus:
Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age."
But it does not elaborate. So I need materials to beef up these claims.
In a nutshell, I want references that would give me so much materials to
quote about the "oldness" of mining or its being an ancient human
activity.
And I need a historical presentation of this like:
Did you know that mining can be traced back to ___ B.C.? This so and
so
person used copper to build the Babel tower or whatever.
OR, a time line that would place the discovery, and development of
mining
vis-a-vis human history. A historical data to prove the theory that the
discovery and development of mining is significant, if not parallel, to
human civilization's own development and survival.
Thank you for the bother.
And whatever material or lead you can give will be a great help.
If you care to know, this will be used in the information material I am
preparing for our own locality. Mining has become a controversial and
emotional issue that there is a movement to stop and oppose all mining
projects. And we in the government is trying all efforts to educate the
populace. And for now, we identified the need to establish the
'"essentiality" of mining and where else to start but history - to let
them
know that mining has always been
here and that we need it more today to survive as a civilization.
Please reply.
