Guided tours of Grime's Graves
On Sunday 14th May, Pete Topping and Martyn Barber, two of the authors of
RCHME's recently published "Neolithic Flint Mines of England", will be at
Grime's Graves, Norfolk, conducting guided tours around the earthworks of
the country's best-known Neolithic flint mine. One of just 10 definite
Neolithic flint mines in England, Grime's Graves is also one of the
best-preserved above ground, and one of only 2 with easy public access.
Hopefully, anyone attending will leave with a reasonable understanding of
(i) what the surviving earthworks represent;
(ii) what flint mining in the Neolithic involved;
(iii) the history of archaeological investigations at Grime's Graves
(including both facts and gossip); and
(iv) the place of flint mining within the British Neolithic;
as well as a copy of the book (optional, of course), a bargain at just 25
English pounds!
First tour starts at circa 11am; each is expected to last circa 45 minutes
to 1 hour, and will end with a descent into "Pit 1", excavated in 1914 by
the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia. Anyone who wants to scurry around in
the underground galleries may find a torch useful.
Feel free to contact me for any further information.
