Re:Award of George Cross to miners
I too, read the obit.,in the Daily Telegragh,of George Manwaring who won
his medal as a result of bravery during an inrush of water at the
Waterloo(Arthur & Edward )
Colliery,at the top of Lydbrook,in the Forest of Dean.
In 1998 the same paper published the obituary of Philip Yates GC. who won
his
medal following the explosion at Bentley Colliery (nr. Doncaster) on
20/11/1931.
This explosion cost 45 lives and the description in the paper is very
detailed,as
is that of the incident concerning George Manwaring. It's nice to see this
recognition
in a National Daily and both accounts(which I have) form a valuable
historical
record.
