Dear List,
As one of my favourite pubs is close to the Kingsteignton/Bovey area, I pass
the workings frequently. I am no expert ( at least not in this subject) but
the workings
appear to be low level, ie with spoil on the surface in relatively small
barrow like mounds. This contrasts with the darn great holes in the ground
which can be found to the NE of Plymouth on the fringe of Dartmoor. I
conclude, probably wrongly that it is either a form of opencast working, or
very low level mining operations. The operator has a name like Watts, Blake
Bearne and recently lost a case wherein they tried to divert a river to get
at even more clay. hardly a scientific response but I hope it will be of some
help. Certainly lorries trundle to Teignmouth frequently to load on to Dutch,
German and even Chinese ships. Teignmouth has about five berths, and it is
unusual to ever see the lot empty. Before that, I think the clay went to
Heathfield sidiings and then by train to Teignmouth Docks.
