Hi
Not particularly by design, I find myself publishing several mining
histories in the next 6 months and the first has a few references out of my
area which may be of use to someone!
'Copper & Lead Mines around the Manifold Valley, N Staffordshire' by myself
& John Robey. It covers the whole of the N Staffs orefield, about 135,000
words, £19.95 , due April
'Derbyshire Blue John' by TD Ford, just arrived 112pp £5.95
'Lathkilldale: its Lead Mines & Miners', reprint (updated ) from Jim
Rieuwerts. June,
'Lead Mining in the Peak District' the PDMHS book, much revised and with
colour, now April, £9.95, also now includes new areas. So much for the
advert, now the info I have:
I've come across a lot of MSS (chiefly letters) which I have used in the N
Staffs book. They include material concerning people investing elsewhere
Viz: the Marsden family-
Anthony, of Leek, Staffs, Johnathan of Silian, near Lampeter and John of
Llanfairbryn.
They had connections with Rhyscog Mine, Lampeter and also in the Royledge
mine in N Staffs.under a lease of 1841.
At Mixon Mine in 1839 , I have material on a John Attwood Beaver and JS
Smith, both of Manchester. They had connections with mining in the Tavy
area, ? North Tamar, I wonder. Its North Tamar or Tavy, unfortunately its
the one word in the whole letter I cannot read properly. Also they were
involved with the Ty Mawr Slate Quarry in N Wales. Probably the one near
Nantlle although Jean Lindsey says this quarry was worked from about 1870.
Has anyone else come across these two?
Thomas Boothman, who had mining interests in the Peak eg Side Mine, and in
Ireland, was also investing in Royledge in the 1840s.
The book also has detail on a geo-phys survey of the Ellastone Smelter site
near Ashbourne, which was shut by 1660. We have located the building, and
what may well be the hearth and wheel area.
I Hope this is of use to someone amongst you!
