Hi Mailbase members
I am intending to visit the Perak area of Malaysia later this year so
naturally I am quite interested in what mining remains exist that
bear testiment to British mining involvement. I presume that tin dredgers
are evident in the area, but of more interest I came across a reference in
an early 1900s book that refers to Europeans introducing steam drainage
into the area about 1880 that was superior to the chinese method of using
rag and chain pumps. Can anyone throw any light on the use of steam power
on mine sites in the Perak area. I didn't think there were any deep mines
in the area as the tin seems to have limited depth in the granites that
underlie the alluvium. But prove me wrong! The only tour of mining
interest at the moment appears to be the geology museum at Ipoh. Anyone
know anything about the area who can point me in the direction of other
sites of mining interest?
