To correct Richard:
Borax is not used in the Fire Assay process for Gold & Silver.
However it is used as the principle flux for the smelting of Gold and
Silver.
Another use is in photography where it is used in Developer formulae.

The main uses of borax are:
1. As a source of perborates in washing powders and detergents
2. In heat resistant glass
3. As a hand-cleaning agent
4. Brazing flux
5. It used to be used as a shampoo to treat scurf on babies heads. I
suppose
there's a proprietary product available now.
6. Miscellaneous uses as a lab chemical including use as a fusion agent in
the
fire assay for gold and silver.
