Thanks to all who provided information re Lists of Mines. Yesterday I made
the trip down to the BL. The lists I particulary wanted to view, from 1850
to 1888 are apparently stored of site and require 24 hours notice to view. I
did not have a completely wasted journey, I did see the 1883 to 1888 lists
in the Mineral Statistics volumes, but only had time to note the entries for
the Rotherham area. The point I am making is that if anybody is planning a
visit to the BL its wise to phone first and make sure the material is stored
on site. Also the only Reading Room where you can view the Parliamentary
Papers,(Mineral Statistics) so I was told is Science North 2. One point of
interest that I did not have time to follow up was a colliery registration
and district number eg Blackhill and Herringthorpe,(abandonend 30.11.1878)
district 5 reg no 336. I think this refers to the original reg. required by
the 1850 Act, but intend to follow up next week, in the meantime any clues
would be welcome. Thanks again Les Wells.
