The Thornton / Clayton area lies on Lower Coal Measure rocks. Several coal
seams outcrop in the area noteably the Halifax Hard and Soft seams.
Although these seams rarely get above 60cm they have been extensively
worked as they frequently have associated with them a good fireclay. Thus
the mines usually worked both coal and fireclay. Quarrying in the area was
generally in the Elland Flags - a robust gritstone, still quarried today
for Yorkshire Flagstone.
