There was a strong British presence in the mines of Real del Monte and
Pachuca from the 1820s until the end of the century.
See Randall, R W. Real del Monte: A British mining venture in Mexico, Austin
(Texas), 1972. Also, Herrera, Ines. and Ortiz, Rina. Mexican Mining
Heritage - The Real del Monte Site, in America's Mining Heritage, CRM, 21, 7
(1998), 19-22, published by the US National Park Service and online at
http://tps.cr.nps.gov/crm/issue.cfm?volume=21&number=07 You will need Adobe
Acrobat to view the online version.
Contact the Archivo Historico y Museo de Mineria, A.C. (director Belem
Oviedo Gamez) in Pachuca for more information, including access to their
extensive archive. They recently (1997) published an excellent series of old
photographs of the mining district - Canto en la Tierra e Imagen ante el Tiempo.
I have only visited the Real del Monte part of the district plus areas to
the north, not El Chico, but found an interesting blend of British (largely
Cornish), Latin American and German technology.
