Mike Moore wrote about yobs and Smallcleugh mine as an example
Mike, (just for the record, you understand)....the spelling is Smallcleugh,
according to old mine plans. (no man engines here, either).
We at the North Pennines Heritage Trust would like to conserve the
mineworkings to prevent damage by ignorant and uncaring visitors. We have
actually made a start at Carrs Level further down the valley.
Readers of the list might like to take up our invitation to participate in
the interpretation and conservation of this mine. We have a lease from the
landowners, the local government authority for the area. The mine lies
within a scheduled ancient monument and is also partially within an SSSI.
We welcome any suggestions about how we might interpret the mine, both
historically and geologically etc. We also have winter resident Bats which
give an added interest for visitors.
I invite anyone to contribute to the debate about how we should interpret
what the visitor sees at Carrs Level.
The trust is currently rehabilitating the mine under the leadership of Dave
Carlisle. We hope to open the mine to visitors in the summer of this year.
The current operations have the status of an operating mine and access to
Carrs Level is therefore not possible at the present time.
This operation might claim to be the first operating metalliferous mine in
Alston Moor since Roughside mine closed in 1966.
