Mike Breakspeed,
I would like to receive a photo of your velocipede. I can't see
that one would be of much use in a mine, except for an official to enter
and exit a small mine at odd hours. As a small boy in the 1930's I had
a chance to play with one which belonged to the Canadian Pacific
Railway. I never saw it used by the section men (the section foreman
had a powered speeder), but occasionally (for what reason I have no
idea) it was left outside the shed in which it was stored. Once several
of us boys moved it onto the main track, but fortunately the section
foreman found us before we lost control of it. The track was maximum
grade for the CPR for 15 miles below the section house. It could have
caused major problems. I would hate to see one get loose in a mine, but
occasionally ore cars did get loose and they would be much more
dangerous.
