In her recent article on 'Researching Mining History in the UK,' British
Mining 63 (1999), pp. 147-155, Hazel Martel points out that the abandonment
plans for Cumbrian mines, formerly held by HSE, are currently held by the
British Geological Survey Office in Edinburgh. I was under the impression
that all such plans were dispersed to local (county) record offices. This
deviation from the norm, when adequate facilities are available in Cumbria,
begs the question as the current location of Scottish mine abandonment
plans. Does any member know the answer?
My query concerns abandonment plans for mines other than coal and associated
minerals. Those are, of course, deposited with the Coal Authority at Bretby.
