Dear all,
I have just heard that English China Clays has been / is going to be
awarded planning permission to demolish Greensplatt engine
house as part of a redevelopment scheme, along with all other
surface features as far as I can tell.
The intriguing fact is that the building was listed, but apparently
ECC have mysteriously got it "de-listed" on the basis that it is
lacking it's roof...
Does anyone have any details on this, in particular does anyone
know whether Greensplatt was one of the "reserve" engines kept
by ECC for emergency pumping work? If so, the engine is no
longer there as the house is described as empty!
This seems a dangerous precedent because if listed engine
houses (note not scheduled) can be de-listed this easily then many
of the surviving houses have no real protection at all. Will English
Heritage consider scheduling in future (especially as the mid-
Cornwall area is apparently a candidate for World Heritage Site
status on the basis of the surviving mining remains)?
Regards,
Martin Roseveare
