Dave Williams kindly identified Moorgreen Colliery
DOES ANYBODY KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS
Christopher Keeling (born circa 1802) moved to Cromhall sometime before the
tithe schedule of
1839 since he was manager of the works at that time. I don't know when he
left Moorgreen, nor do I have any clues as to whether he was a manager,
under manager etc nor why he came to work at a pit run by Samuel Long (the
mill owner). It appears his family moved with him since their names appear
in both the tithe schedule and later in nearby Yate working the mines there.
If anybody has researched the history of Moorgreen colliery in the early to
mid 19th Century it may give some answers.
NB the reference to Moorgreen on the 1851 Census gives this as his place of
origin which usually means the place of birth it is therefore possible that
he (and family) were working elsewhere before moving to Cromhall, having
originally came from Moorgreen.
Is Moorgreen a place as well as a colliery?
The other places of birth for his brothers suggests the family moved around
the coalfields.
Are there any Keelings known to have worked other collieries?
On the same basis although the name Nowell is associated with "Bosley"
Cheshire, this lady could also have moved, particularly if her husband was
also a mine owner before his death (she is a widow in 1851)
If anybody has references relating to these names as mine owners etc prior
to 1851 in any of the other coalfields these may also be relevant and would
be appreciated.
Thanks again
DAVID
