There was a lengthy article by Roy Day in the BIAS Journal Volume 12 (1979)
on the Wiltshire iron industry (Westbury and Seend), though I have no trace
of anything published on Malago Vale, unfortunately.
As for connections between the two companies? There were a few with common
shareholdings: D Joseph was in the 1878 shareholders' register of the
Westbury Iron Co as well as being a shareholder of the Bristol Collieries
Co Ltd which owned the Malago Vale pit (from 1873 until wound up in 1910).
Also the Hollwey family had interests in both concerns, though that is not
in itself a cause for wonder since they seem to have their fingers in most
of the local pies.
The New Westbury Iron Co, founded in 1903, was largely in the hands of
outside interests (Paton, Lancaster, Wanklyn, Lysaght etc), though I can't
find any connection with the Hook Norton interests.
Basic company details, shareholder lists etc, are at the PRO:
BT31/1900/7683 Bristol Collieries Co Ltd
BT31/279/948 Westbury Iron Co Ltd
BT31/34741/77615 New Westbury Iron Co Ltd
Hope this is of some use to you.
