Go to http://www.exeter.ac.uk/~pfclaugh/mhinf/contents.htm click on List of
Mines in North Devon and search either by NGR or for the following specific
mine names -
Bideford Anthracite
Chapel Park
Broadstone
Bideford Black
Westwood Culm
All the above are in Bideford (East the Water). Other anthracite mines will
be found along the strike of the seams from Bideford westwards and east of
the Torridge towards Tawstock and Hawkridge Wood on the Taw. Anthracite
mining commenced as early as the 17th century. The last mine closed in 1969
and unfortunately most physical evidence of 20th century activity was
cleared away. I understand that recent road works at East the Water did
reveal more of the 19th century workings but I have not had chance to check
personally.
