Any family history researcher would be able to answer your question.
My wife tells me that Jno is an abbreviation for John; also sometimes just
Jn.
The abbreviation for Jonathon is normally Jonat or Jonth.
For interest other abbreviations are:
Jas James
Jos Joseph
Josh Joshua
Alc Alice
Dy Dorothy
Em Emma or Emily
Hon Honour
Wm William
Mart Martha (beware reading as Mary)
Tam Tamsin or Thomasin
Xian Christian
Xpr Christopher
Geo George
But beware these are not necessarily general rules; it all depends on the
person writing the original record.
If you are interested in more information on Christian names, their
diminutives and the Latin original names that lots of current names are
derived from, consult:
The Family Historian's ENQUIRE WITHIN
by FC Markwell & Pauline Saul
ISBN 0 907099 52 1
(Most of the above information is from this book, which is still copyright!)
The above book quotes Volume 1 of The National Index of Parish Registers by
D Steel (pages 110 to 112) as a good source of information on Christian
names. Also The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names by EG
Withycombe published in 1945; presumably this is the definitive work (unless
you know better!)
I hope the above all helps and isn't too much off the track of Mining
History.
