Roger,
Thanks for your view. That was what I was trying to say but you put it so
much better!
There is a great gap between guide materials for the tourist or
non-expert and what's available for the enthusiast. When someone comes
up with an offering to fill that need, I think we would do better to try
and correct it rather than get it outlawed .
There is much to see in the Dales, particularly for smelting mills but a
definite gap in guidance material. The main sources for the newcomer are
still Raistrick's books and Clough 's book - all long out of print. The
papers in Britsh Mining are good and Mike's two papers summarising the
history of the mills is outstanding. However, they are written for a
different audience, There are no glossy pics, background descriptions
on processes, colourful anecdotes and all the other things the newcomer
wants. The internet is becoming a useful vehicle for filling this gap
and at present the Yorkshire Dales National Park site doesn't really cover
this subject in any depth.
There is much to learn from this particular website and we would do well to
acknowledge the good things which are there as well as help the authors
correct the errors they have made.
Richard
