On a more general note regarding capping shafts....
I am lead to believe that (in the UK) current legislation requires consent
for work to coal mine shafts. I am told that this applies even if the shaft
has been "sold" previously.
I have also been told that prosecutions have taken place against
individuals/groups in recent years as a result of failing to comply with
this requirement. Well meaning groups of enthusiasts wishing to preserve a
shaft could easily end up in hot water as a result. Also the Coal
Authorities approach for capping shafts seems to be (from enquiries made) to
clear the site down to bedrock and apply a concrete cap destroying in the
process not only the shaft but any adjacent remains also.
Does anyone on the list have a fuller understanding of the requirements in
order that this might be clarified
Regards
David Hardwick
