Cleveland Potash, Boulby, North Yorkshire, are compiling a GIS based
database of other mines within the vicinity of their Boulby mine. This
includes the ironstone mines of the North York Moors but also 'jet mines,
alum mines (quarries), cement stone mines and stone quarries'. They are
'slowly but surely digitising and georeferencing our collection of ironstone
mine plans and intend to survey some of the other mines during the coming
year or two'. Their environmetal manager has suggested that the work 'will
have a wider value than within the company vaults' and he is 'prepared to
examine ways of making it more accessible'. With this in mind he has
contacted the University of Exeter to enquire if there is the possiblity of
linking their work to a student project. The sort of project they envisage
would clearly have to provide benefits for both parties - either involving
students in the practical work or linking the survey to student based
archival research.
If members, or the institutions / mining interest groups they might
represent, are interested in co-operation of this nature with Cleveland
Potash please contact Roger Burt, or myself, using
