My research has confirmed that for the best part of WW1 most of the
offensive action was centred on underground tunnels.
Many underground stations were built to house control stations, rest
facilities etc., and I am also aware that many local caves were
utilised and expanded upon, particularly by the French.
Bearing in mind the high numbers of miners recruited for the
tunnelling operations it is hardly surprising that a site such as that
reported upon was developed as a (relatively) safe field hospital.
