There are several different companies supplying oxygen testing equipment
suitable for use in mines and confined spaces. Three that readily come to
mind are Neotronics, Crowcon and Drager. Testing atmospheres for oxygen
deficiency is only part of the problem, when entering a confined space it is
necessary to test for oxygen level, toxic gasses and explosive gasses. There
are a number of factors to take into account when developing a gas
monitoring strategy, these include local geological conditions and
environmental conditions.
Local utilities, especially water companies with their many buried
facilities, have much experience of local conditions and will have developed
'safe systems' for all entries into confined spaces. A call to the local
water company safety advisor (usually based at the water co. HQ) may provide
you with much useful info including local suppliers of gas monitoring
equipment.
If you are not having any success please let me know and I will give you the
names of others who may be able to help you.
