Hi everyone,
I am acting as editor for a new series of books on the Stationary Steam Engines of Great Britain. George Watkins' superb photographs of stationary steam engines are well known to technical and local historians as well as industrial archaeologists, and are mostly unpublished. They are now in the NMR, Swindon. He wrote papers for the Newcomen Society on the vertical winding engines of the North East, and on the evolution of the steam colliery winding engine.
Each photograph (taken between c1930 and c1970) is accompanied by technical and historical notes about the mill, mine or manufactory concerned, and will be of interest to all historians concerned with the industrial past. Mill steam engines, water mills, iron works, mines and waterworks are covered.
It is proposed to publish all 1500 of them in a series of ten regional volumes, and the first volume, covering Yorkshire and with 220 images is now published. It is available at UKP25.00 from Landmark Publishing, of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. (Foreign orders P/P extra)

Volume 2 on Scotland, Co Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland will be ready in the New Year, and volume 3 on Lancashire from midsummer 2001.
Regards
Tony Woolrich
