The following question might be slightly away from mining but follows the
thread of this discussion.
I recently came across two pieces of what appears to be slag probably from
smelting iron. One was on the site of what was probably a Bell Pit near
Iron Acton (area known for its Iron mining as suggested by the name) - The
other in a stream near to a recently discovered Iron age settlement in
Alveston (not near known iron deposits)
(both Iron Acton and Alveston are North of Bristol for those wh don't know)
The question is - how can slag and such substances best be identified
(and/or dated)?
