I have lots of thoughts on this, and I think it is a really crucial area of midwifery practice - that is the active capacity to prevent intervention rather than the passive watching and waiting skills which are only a part of our value as midwives. I would need to discuss it fully over the phone, because I don't have time to write all my thoughts - however, the gist of them is that the most important thing midwives can do is have absolute faith in the capacity of the vast majority of women to birth their babies without intervention, and to learn every skill, trick, and observation necessary to help that process along. allied to this is the consent openness to the uniqueness of eery labour without losing sight of the evidence base - but also recognising that evidence is based on populations and NOT on individuals. Practical skills such as optimal fetal positioning, the knowledge of a womans personal and family history, knowledge of her beliefs and family culture around birth, and a strength of will to ensure that other professions notice and respect midwifery skills would be some of the key elements.
Best wishes

Hi Jackie,
Thank you very much for your information, but I think I am doing something
wrong. I tried that website again and this time I tried to register only to
find that I had created a discussion list!!
I have not heard from anyone else about the midwife's role in prevention of
c/section. Are you there midwives? I would really appreciate your views about
what you think the midwife's role is in prevention of c/section? I'm sure you
all have ideas about this.
Many thanks,
