Hi
Please could someone tell me when the British 'Flying Squads' disappeared,
why they went and what replaced them! In Australia midwives are told that
they can't have a publicly-funded homebirths cause Oz doesn't have flying
squads! We do have ambulances and paramedics and Flying doctors.
I also need to know about 'Trusts' and their relationships with other
organisations ie the NHS and individual midwives/women. I'm trying to work
out after the state and the NHS who now makes policies in maternity
services such as homebirth.
I read in Birth, (27,1, 2000) that according to Sheila Kitzinger 'legally
trusts have not had a statutory duty to provide a domiciliary birth service
since the NHS was re-organised in the 1970's. By an oversight, provision
for this was omitted from the bill. Yet it is government policy that women
have the right to give birth at home'. If this is so does this mean that
British women (according to the whim of the Trusts) no longer have the
choice (by law) of a homebirth? Or have I got it wrong and what happened?
Thanks Carol
