Dear Andrea, and listmembers,
First, my brief introduction.
My name is Julei Busch. I am 40, single mother of two (12 and 8), doing
my degree in midwifery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I am in year 2 of
5. I am co-founder of a Doula collective, BirthPassages. We work from
fertility awareness thru postpartum home care. I am a strong supporter
of woman-centered, community-based practice.
I have a B.Sc. in Research Psychology (neuropsychology), three years
clinical research at postgraduate level, 15 years as practitioner of
body-centered therapies (Shiatsu, Reiki, Zen Karate-do, Yoga,
Biosomatics, and others) and most recently, am co-founder of a social
justice middle school, Voice Intermediate.
I have been doing a literature search on homebirth for school. I recall
there were several reasonably recent studies that you could compile to
get at these specific statistics. I didn't pull it, but there was a very
recent one on Canada and US maternal mortality stats; don't know if they
looked at homebirth separate from 'out of hospital'. I'd suggest you
search PubMed first, using "homebirth, United States, Mortality". Then
go to Medline, and do same. Most university libraries can get the
public free access to fulltext periodicals via their online service from
which you can get most articles downloaded free. Hope this helps.
May I ask what you mean by 'traditional'?
Julei
