In our unit in Lymington we have single rooms for all the women, in which
they can give birth if they wish, but being a small unit, we only have
eight rooms in total. We also have a birthing room, which is bigger, and
can accommodate our (portable) birth pool. We will be moving to a new
hospital in a couple of years and it is intended that the standard of
accommodation should be the same. Some of us feel that the birthing room
should not be dominated by a bed, so one of the rooms at the new unit will
be a pool room and another one which may have a futon, rather than a bed,
amongst other accoutrements. We still have to thrash all this out between
us, but it's really quite fun - we will also be asking the MSLC for their
advice as well as clients past and present.
