> Dear Members,
I wonder whether anyone may be able to help me with my research? I am a midwife and currently work on the delivery suite at a Birmingham Maternity Unit. In 1997 as part of my first degree, I chose to study the experience of childbirth for women with a history of sexual abuse. I felt this was a subject which had profound implications both for childbearing women and also for midwives caring for them.
Although much has been written on the adult sequelae of childhood sexual abuse, particularly in terms of mental health problems, there is very little in the literature which describes the effects that such a history may have upon a woman’s experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
I am just beginning an M.Phil and as part of the research, hope to interview women who have been abused and subsequently given birth.
I wondered whether there may be anyone on the list who may be willing to be interviewed as part of the study? I sincerely hope that using this internet approach in order to contact participants will not cause any bad feelings amongst list members. I have discussed the approach with both my academic supervisor (Mavis Kirkham) and my clinical supervisor (Amanda Gatherer – a clinical psychologist) and both felt this was an acceptable way to contact suitable women.
My home telephone number is 0121 733 8256. I also have a mobile telephone 0797 1836664. Thank you
Maggie Smith (Birmingham)
