"Book Sales Catalogues of the Dutch Republic, 1599-1800"
now on Internet
The project "Book Sales Catalogues of the Dutch Republic, 1599-1800" of
the Department of Dutch Language and Literature of Leiden University was
initiated by the late Professor Bert van Selm, and is now being executed
by H.W. the Kooker (Leiden), with the cooperation of Dr. J.A. Gruys (Royal
Library, The Hague) and IDC Publishers (Leiden).
The project aims at tracing and recording all surviving copies of all
Dutch book sales catalogues printed before 1801, in order to microfilm one
copy of each edition for publication on microfiche and, finally, to
compile a bibliography with a census of all extant copies. At present,
copies of c. 4350 catalogues have been traced: c. 3200 auction catalogues
of private libraries and anonymous collections, and c. 1150 wholesale and
retail catalogues of printers, publishers and booksellers as well as some
minor or peripheral categories (whether for an auction or not). The
largest collections of pre-1801 Dutch book sales catalogues are in
Amsterdam (Library of the Dutch Book Trade Association, in Amsterdam
University Library, c. 950), Paris (Bibliotheque Nationale de France, c.
950), St. Petersburg (National Library of Russia, c. 830) and
Wolfenbuettel (Herzog August Library, c. 800 catalogues). The holdings of
these libraries have been filmed already, as have those of most other
Dutch libraries: c. 3100 catalogues in all.
The instalments of microfiches issued by IDC Publishers (Leiden) were
accompanied each time by a printed Guide (cumulating periodically). With
Instalment 13 a CD-ROM was published that also contained images of all
title-pages in addition to the bibliographical descriptions. At present,
seventeen instalments have been published, and the eighteenth is in
preparation.
Recently, the Guide has been made accessible as a database on the
Internet. It can be searched by the separate fields for collectors,
auctioneers or (book)sellers, places, years and dates and so on,
separately or in combination, or by all words of the description
indiscriminately (years and dates included). The resulting set can be
printed or downloaded in its entirety or by single record as a text file
or HTML file.
