Ph.D. Studentship: Changes in Higher Education

The Centre for Learning and Teaching Sociology,
Anthropology and Politics is
offering a studentship consisting of payment of
fees (home student rate) and
a maintenance grant at ESRC rates (£7,380)
starting January 2001, for up to
three years.
The student will conduct research for the Centre
one day per week whilst
engaged in research for a Ph.D. on any aspect of
change in Higher Education
related to Learning and Teaching.
Projects will be preferred which relate to the
Centre's aims to develop a
reflexive, critical engagement with pedagogic
and curriculum issues and
especially to use the attributes of one or more
of its disciplines
(sociology, cultural studies, anthropology and
politics) to study processes
of change in higher education.
The newly established Centre is one of 24
Subject Centres funded by the
Higher Education Funding Councils' Learning and
Teaching Support Network
(LTSN). The successful applicant will be based
in the Centre whilst also
enrolled on the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme in
Cultural Studies and Sociology and
would have a supervisor in that Department. If
appropriate, research
training can also be provided by the Department
of Political Science and
International Studies.

Applicants must have a first class or good 2.1
first degree in a relevant
discipline. Application forms must be

four page project proposal setting out the
proposed research topic, its
intellectual context and the methodology that
would be used.
