I'd like to say thanks to members of the list for their feedback about
the map search which will be taken onboard. The map in use was affected
by a number of design considerations with regard to usability. It was
decided to keep it small to reduce the amount of scrolling users might
need to do. The outcome of this was that the map rapidly become
cluttered as more features; roads, rivers, etc.,
were added for orientation. Daphne's idea of alt tags for county names
would be very useful to users. We are investigating whether this would
be possible to implement. Currently the map is a single image and not an
HTML imagemap. The latter would allow the counties to be flagged but may
make it difficult to capture the coordinates of the mouse click.
Our initial view was to provide the small-scale map for very general
searches and in the near future to provide large-scale, feature-rich
maps for more specific searches but we will review in light of feedback
and following further usability testing.
Thanks again
Tony
