Some of the filtering software works rather too well. Not only do they block out
some soccer teams becuase of certain words in their titles but some stop
people getting into the official White House Web site because it uses the word
'couples'.
The library service in Norfolk gives free and unrestrained internet access at all
its branches. It simply asks all users to sign a contract not to access various
types of site (porn, racist etc.) and then gives each new user a password. It is
therefore an easy task to keep track of what each user was looking at. I guess
if anybody did look at something they should not have then their access is
taken away.
There was an exhibition at the Science Museum a few years ago in which
visitors had access to the Web and this problem arose then. I can't remember
how they dealt with it but the person responsible for the exhibition was
Stephanie McIvor. She may still be at the Science Museum but she could
certainly help.
Best wishes,
