An edited version follows

Clicks & Mortar: Building Cultural Spaces for the 21st Century

Assessing the impact of the newest technologies in museums, libraries and
archives, the main part of the conference will be 6 - 8 September with
pre-conference workshops taking place on 4 - 5 September.

Museums, libraries and archives as cultural spaces are changing radically.
The combination of the virtual and the tangible will form the new building
blocks of the cultural sector.

The conference will attract an audience mix made up of practitioners and
policy makers from across the breadth of the cultural sector, including
museums, libraries and archives.

With over 50 speakers, the programme features both a strong local focus,
with contributions from museums and other organisations in and around
Newcastle, together with a number of international papers. Thematically,
education and learning are key features, including input from members of the
Group for Education in Museums whilst leading edge technical development
will be explored with a number of stimulating case studies.

Delegates will have a valuable opportunity to view the Trade Fair during the
main days of the conference.

The evening events will give delegates an opportunity to visit some of
Newcastle's unique historic sites, new museums and important collections.

Tuesday 5 September - Evening Drinks Reception at the Laing Art Gallery.
Here, in this famous city centre gallery we will be able to see the
'Millennium Masterpieces' and view other paintings including watercolours in
the Gallery's permanent collection (No transport necessary).

Wednesday 6 September - Evening Drinks Reception at Segedunum Roman Fort,
Museum and Baths
Situated at Wallsend, this new £9 million site which opens in June is the
largest Roman museum on Hadrian's Wall. Besides the excavated fort itself,
there are site finds on display, computer interactives and a reconstructed
bath-house (Transport provided).

Thursday 7 September - Conference Dinner at Bede's World
With its innovative new buildings, paved courtyard and central atrium this
is sure to be the perfect setting for our conference dinner. The museum at
Bede's World takes the visitor back to the life of the Venerable Bede
(AD673 - 735), a scholar of widespread renown during the Golden Age of
Northumbria. Exhibits include computer information points exploring early
Northumbria, Bede's life and the story of the monastery at Jarrow. There is
also a recreated Anglo-Saxon farm with rare breeds of animals and several
replica buildings (Transport provided).
