UKOLUG is pleased to announce two Student Bursaries
UKOLUG is the UK Online User Group, a Special Interest
Group of the Institute of Information Scientists with
members who are principally concerned with the creation,
supply and use of electronic resources and in training
for their efficient use. The UKOLUG Web site is at:
UKOLUG is offering two awards, each of £2,500, to
students on courses that have a significant coverage of
information resources (UKOLUG is likely to favour
students on courses that cover electronic sources). One
award will go to a postgraduate student and one to an
undergraduate and the rules governing submission are
given below. The award will be made by means of one
payment at the start of each academic term.
Each department may put forward the name of one student
who they believe to be deserving of the award, along with
a brief recommendation detailing why UKOLUG should choose
their candidate (including some information on the
course).
While most of our members originate in schools and
departments of library and information science, there are
an increasing number of courses offered by other
departments that have significant information handling or
management content and thus the new awards are also on
offer to other departments in Universities throughout UK.
UKOLUG reserves the right to withhold either award if no
suitable candidate is submitted.
UKOLUG wish to make the first of the three payments as
near to the beginning of the academic year as possible
and so submissions should be sent to us by September 30th
in order that payment can be made in October. Submissions
should only be sent to UKOLUG by departmental admissions
officers. Students should not apply directly. UKOLUG make
the following stipulations:
* An award is open to students on both first-degree and
post-graduate qualification courses (whether taught or
research) which include significant information handling
content.
* The award is not open to distance learners unless they
are un-waged.
* The award is equally available to a student beginning
any year of a course.
* Each department may only submit one student.
* Should this Bursary be offered next year, the award
will not be available to a student who has previously
received it.
* The award is only open to self-funding students who are
not in receipt of another award, bursary or scholarship.
A formal letter containing this offer has been posted to
all Heads of Departments of Library and Information
Studies today (25/05/2000). A letter to other
Universities will follow shortly.
