The First Pearson Memorial Lecture was given on 5 July 2000 in Cambridge
University Library. The speaker was Paul Auchterlonie of Exeter University
Library, and his subject was "From the Eastern Question to the death of General
Gordon: representations of the Middle East in the Victorian periodical press,
1876-1885". I am please to announce that the text of this lecture will be
published in the May 2001 issue of the _British Journal of Middle Eastern
Studies_.
This annual public lecture series is presented by the Middle East Libraries
Committee of the United Kingdom (MELCOM-UK), in conjunction with the Islamic
Bibliography Unit of Cambridge University Library, as a memorial to the late
Professor J.D. Pearson (1911-97). The themes of the series are Middle Eastern
librarianship and bibliography, in the broadest sense.
The Second Pearson Memorial Lecture will be given in Edinburgh in July 2001, by
Dr Derek Hopwood of St Antony's College, Oxford. Further details will be
announced later.
