Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers is seeking an author to write a 4000-word essay
on "Middle Eastern and North African Libraries" for the International
Dictionary of Library Histories, being edited by David Stam and forthcoming
in early 2001. Within the space constraints of a single 1,000-page volume,
the goal of the project is to include most of the world's important research
libraries and other libraries with globally or regionally notable
collections, innovative traditions, and significant and interesting
histories. In addition, the work will include introductory articles on the
history of various types of libraries as well as library history in various
regions of the world. Contributions are not intended to be original works of
scholarship (though that would be most welcome) and will often be derivative
from existing printed sources. The histories should, however, be framed in
new ways, using institutional archival sources when possible, and must avoid
even the appearance of plagiarism from existing sources. We can offer an
honorarium of US$200/£133 for the essay, payable upon publication.
Contributors may purchase copies of the book at half price (the retail price
of the volume will be approximately $125/£95). Further information about the
project and sample essays can be found on our website:
