LIBNET News - News of the Israel Universities Library Network: MALMAD

- RAMBI on the Web
The Jewish National and University Library (JNUL) and MALMAD are happy
to announce that the JNUL's "Index of Articles on Jewish Studies"
(RAMBI) is now accessible via the World Wide Web at URL:
http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/rmb
RAMBI, the premier bibliographic tool of current articles in
Jewish Studies has been published since 1969 in annual printed
volumes. The RAMBI database, until now available only via the old
TELNET interface, includes material from RAMBI volume 28 (1985) to
date. A project to convert the earlier 1969-1984 volumes, funded
by The Lucius N. Littauer Foundation, is underway and we hope to add
this material to the database by the end of 2000.
Every record in the RAMBI database contains two distinct subject
classification fields: a general classification field (Section e.g.
Bible; Diaspora; Philosophy), and specific subject headings (Subject
e.g. Genesis: 1; USA: education; Maimonides: Moreh Nevukhim). Attempts
are made to utilize the two fields in tandem to provide maximum
subject descriptions of the articles, although each field is indexed
and may be browsed separately. Subjects in RAMBI are in the script of
the article (English or Hebrew) and therefore to find materials by
subject in both it is often necessary to search twice. Searching by
Section retrieves all records, regardless of language and script.
Special features in the WWW implementation of RAMBI include: 1) a
cut-and-paste format to make it easier to copy entries to a word
processing program, 2) links from journal articles to the title index
of the Israel Union List of Serials (ULS), 3) implementation of the
Hebrew "virtual keyboard" for searchers abroad who do not have Israeli
Windows and 4) special routines to allow use of both Hebrew "visual"
and "logical" fonts.
For further information on these and other features of RAMBI, click on
the "RAMBI Help" link at the top of the RAMBI search screens.
The RAMBI WWW implementation is a further stage in the "National
Bibliographic Database on the Information Superhighway" project being
implemented by MALMAD and funded by the Israel Ministry of Science.
