The major consensus is YES, stop buying the print versions.
Thanks so much for your input!

How many of you have stopped purchasing the annual cumulated print version
of Index Medicus and CINAHL due to onlineavailability?
Our library has access to MEDLINE and CINAHL via OVID. Due to budget
constraints, canceling these print versions seems more efficient than
cutting journal subscriptions.
Are there others who are considering this course of action?
TIA for any input!

If you cancel the print indexes, I highly recommend continuing to get the
print thesauri as a guide to effective searching. In addition to the
subject
headings, you get scope notes for subheadings and publication types, as
well
as other useful matrial for searching and training.
By the way, the print CINAHL is not as comprehensive as the online
database.
For access to the *journal* literature, it's very effective for nurses,
allied health personnel, students and consumers. So I agree with the
person
who wrote that's is very useful when you can't offer enough public access
computers. And, as a backup when web is down. I wish they still
published
Abridged Index Medicus for network down situations...
Hope this helps - Peg

Dear Karen,
I was asking the same question, and I stopped all the printed indexes
except
CIM. But now I am debating whether to stop it or continue getting it. So
thank you for your question, and for the Medliber answers, I am going to
stop
getting CIM.

Hilda Nassar

Dear Medlibbers,
I have a patron who is looking for the DNA sequence for
insulin in humans. He needs to use an Internet resource.
Any ideas?

Use the NCBI web page for access to GenBank:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
I'd recommend a search that looks like this:
human[orgn] AND "insulin"[Protein Name]
I happen to know that the actual record you want is accesion number:
AH002844
So you can also get to it using this search:

Subject: ?: Factoids about Librarians (cont.)
Resending message since I didn't have it formatted right nor did I have my
email listed. Sorry for the repeat posting.
Hi gang...since October is shortly upon us and National Medical
Librarian's
Month is coming up, I want to do some fun "marketing and awareness stuff
about library services for staff and physicians. (especially since I have
inherited MANY MORE clients than I had before, but they need to know I
exist!).
Do any of you have any fun stats/stories/historical data to share...like
"did you know that librarians are the .... ......bla bla..." how many
librarians does it take to....(fill in the blank). Historical
items....like the real reason we have independence from the British is
that
librarians were the ones who did the research for the Declaration of
Independence....etc etc. "Or not many people realize that"......Osler
was
a librarian before 'she' was a physician..... etc. etc. :)
I am seriously researching and humorously making up some fun stuff but
would
love to tap into the rich fabric that makes up
Medlib-L. Of course if anyone cares, I'll save all the wisdom and
summarize
for the list.
Thanks as always in advance for your collective wisdom and humor....

Anticipating a surge of questions on the ethics of physician-assisted
suicide (PAS) after tonight's airing of the Bill Moyers PBS special "On
Our Own Terms," we have updated our online annotated bibliography on the
topic and moved it to the top of our home page. New links have been added
for recent journal issues focusing on PAS, and for amicus briefs filed in
conjunction with the Supreme Court's decision on the matter. The
bibliography
can be found at:
http://www.georgetown.edu/research/nrcbl/biblios/suicide.htm
In addition, we can supply customized bibliographies by email or snail
mail. Please let me know if you have any questions about our bibliography
or search services.
