Asking Swets-Blackwell to confirm the price of the journal Social Science
and Medicine, They replied:
<<I can confirm that a year's subscription to "Social Science & Medicine"
will
cost approximately £1930.81 for a 2001 subscription, or £1787.79 for a
subscription covering the current year.>>
How on earth can Elsevier justify such a price for an annual subscription?
Is this similar to the MCB bundling approach?
It is a frequently cited journal, through observation, (I haven't checked
the journal out in Journal Citation Reports).
How do subscribing libraries justify their subscription? Is it through
citation analysis or user demand - or maybe both?
I am intrigued.

Hi Stephanie,
Thank you for your email below dated 26 July - I am sorry that this reply
has taken so long to come through to you, however since David left, his
emails have only just been retrieved.
I can confirm that a year's subscription to "Social Science & Medicine" will
cost approximately £1930.81 for a 2001 subscription, or £1787.79 for a
subscription covering the current year. Elsevier only accept subscriptions
to run on a calendar year basis, so please advise if you would like me to
proceed with an order.
With regards to the outstanding query for "Evidence Based Medicine" CD-Rom,
I would be grateful if you could please forward details of this to me so
that I may investigate further.
Kind regards,
Tamsyn
