We have access to the Internet via the Hospital Intranet and the NHSnet.
So far, the IT have mostly insisted that everyone has their own username,
which not only creates a lot of admin, but also costs approx. £17 a post for
an NT Client Access licence under our set-up. So far, medical students,
registrars, consultants and 50 other junior doctors who get to the top of a
waiting list therefore have access, and most hospital staff don't. However,
I discovered that the Special Care Baby Unit had a machine whichwas
available to anyone working their on the basis that their times in there are
timetabled. I've persuaded IT that we will set up (we hope in February) 2
machines just outside the Library office door. We have space because we'll
be retiring a very elderly CD-ROM drive and PC. These will have their
processors inside the office, and wires to the keyboard, mouse and monitors
outside, and we will (as you have suggested) be the people with the
passwords and sign people up for particular times. We're not looking
forward to the admin, but it's better than the amount we have to do with
individual usernames, and massively reduces the strain on the IT people -
which I think is why we're being allowed to try it.

Please let me know if you've got any more queries - and greeetings from
Peterborough!

Subject: internet access

If any one has succeeded in reaching a satisfactory arrangement with their
IT department about internet access from library pc s I would be very
interested to have the details. Until recently there was a rigid policy here
of no internet access on any networked machine. Both library workstations
are networked so we kept a standalone internet connection in the office.
More recently following various upgrades they are now allowing networked
machines to have internet access and we have this on both office computers.
However at the moment the only conditions under which they would allow us to
have access on a library computer would be for every user to have their own
pass word and even then they still might not allow it. As a short term
measure we are going to set up a standalone connection in another room (as
this is basically a store room and out of sight of the library this is not
very satisfactory!).
At the moment what is available (or not!) is access to the internet via the
hospital's network not NHS Net. I have not yet been able to get an answer
about what is going to happen about NHS Net.

I am wondering whether there could be a solution around having a few
passwords which we don't actually give to users but use to log on for them
and keep a record of who we've logged on when, but don't really want to set
up yet more admin if there's a better way. Of course this would only allow
access when library staff are around but it would be a big improvement on
what we're providing at the moment.
As I am also supposed to be delivering training on Internet use I would
really appreciate any solutions any one can suggest.
